Hi! We were wondering if anyone has experienced a glue failure while using Wilsonart 700/701 canister glue? We used this product for a 5 month period about a year ago and have had 3 projects delam over the last couple weeks. These projects were commercial projects where we used laminate and laid it up on melamine/MDF/PB and it is all failing, it isn’t just one substraight. We did contact our rep and they contacted Wilsonart who sent a glue specialist to come look at the first project but he wasn’t exactly helpful. There was one piece that had a dust flake in it and he said that that was our problem or that it wasn’t rolled enough. But all of our projects go through a pinch press and when that isn’t possible we hand roll them very well. We aren’t new to the business my partner has been doing commercial cabinets for over 20 years and I have 11 years in so we have an idea of what we’re doing. We’ve used a couple of different glues and we’ve never had this problem with any of them. After we were notified about another job that has delamed this week, I called out rep again and now Wilsonart is requesting some samples to run through their lab for testing. We’ll see how that plays out.

Any information on what the cause may be or similar problems with this product would be appreciated! I just did a job count this morning and we’ve completed 23 projects with this product and have already had an issue with 3! To say we’re concerned is an understatement!

Thanks in advance for your time!

I don’t do laminate, but if I am correct, Wilsonart had an issue with their glue a few years back. I think it was a really large failure that involved many fabricators.

    Correct me if I’m wrong.

Andy, you are referring to the “blue glue” debacle. I think the glue model was Lockweld #1055. It was an early attempt at a new non flammable adhesive. I always thank my lucky stars we had aluminum spray pots, which ruled that particular glue out. There was another company that had the same problem, but W/A was the big name in that episode.

    Tori,
Is this glue a solvent based or water based glue? If solvent based, is it flammable or non-flam?

We’ve been using Wilsonart’s H2O water based glue for well over 20 years now without issue.

We used some of Wilsonart’s blue glue, fortunately it was on a personal project for myself (bookcases) that completely delaminated.

The H2O glue is really safe (no fumes) and works really well for us.

    Hi guys!

We started using it because we were told it didn’t have any hydrochloride and was Greenguard and safer for the environment. It is a solvent based that is flammable.

We are aware of Blue Glue but from what I’ve heard that all went down about 15 years ago, if not longer.

I have ran into a couple other people on different sites that have had the same issue with this stuff but they just went ahead and fixed the delamination and switched glues.

I would definitely switch glues if there is a problem. If they already took a sample, see what they say and go from there.

Is there a warranty on the adhesive?

    toricd,
How many projects did you do that failed? I would consider pressing for restitution if there are many of them.

We used this glue on 28 projects, 5 of which we have had failures on! We used this glue from September 2012 thru March 2013 and then we switched to a water base product, simply because we didn’t want to create issues with out fire inspectors since the 701 was flammable. To be honest I’m pretty glad we switched when we did so that more projects weren’t effected.

Ah WilsonArt. They miss SSV, so they are still screwing fabricators HARD to relish in the ancient days of glory. Ah the tales of yore!

Hey we gots us a new glue for the fabricators and it be flammable and won’t work. It don’t stick to shit , except to claims! ! HAH!

    Freaking Idiots!

Why don’t the big companies ever seek fabber input and do Beta testing, with fabbers before putting their proverbial dick into the toaster? Why I asks ya?

If this is as big as SSV, call me. I was one of the expert witnesses in the SSV debacle and didn’t even get a chance to take the stand. I really wanted to go Apeshit on that piss poor offering. But alas, They saw my name and settled out of court. Fraidy cats, I tells ya!
Have gun, will travel! PM me!
