Can CNC’s “tilt” to cut angles?

In other words, can you put a 5 degree angle down the entire edge of a sheet of solid surface with a straight fluted bit?

    Thanks again gents,

Not all CNC’s.  Only if you buy a CNC that is made so that either the table or the cutting head can pivot.

Thanks Len, that’s what we thought.

If it is special cut, just buy a bit with the angle you need. It will cost less than a $100 to have a custom bit made.

or a variable angle bit. then you are covered for a lot.

Not familiar with this type of bit. Do you have a link?

If this is just for one sheet, you could put the sheet up on pods and use a core box tool to rout the angle in several passes. If the passes are close together, it would take very little sanding to get it smooth. I don’t think this would be worth it though if you are machining more than one or two edges. It will take quite a few passes.

Sorry Andy, here you go.  I am not sure where we bought ours or the brand, but here is one I googled.

    Thanks John.

Expensive bit but compared to a custom bit, I think it would be worth it.

Somehow the weight and power of a CNC versus a small set screw seems like a person is asking for trouble. Have you actually used this bit for solid surface on a CNC?

We have use a v-goove bit where the blade is held on with two set screws. We have not had any issues yet, but you never know. Had the bit for about five years.

A lot of shaper and molder bits are done the same way. They are not normally dealing with SS but they hold up just fine as long as you take care of them.
