If you look at LEED points and check out what makes a eco friendly material, you will see that low VOC (Volitile Organic Compounds) and high recycled content both help to achieve higher LEED points.

But, what is better?  Laminate is placed on particle board which is basically 98% sawdust left over from cutting wood with a thin piece of material over the top.  They claim it has a higher VOC rating.

IceStone on the other hand, has a low VOC rating and is high in recycled content.  But the recycled content is something that really doesn’t need to be saved from the landfill.  Glass is used in pavement and other street base material so using glass for countertops isn’t really doing much to save the environment.

So what is better, low VOC or high recycled content?  Or…does it really matter?
