Hello All,
Just wanted to keep all you up to date about what is going on with the FabNet Upgrade. I have talked with a few computer specialist and they will be working on the site over the next week.
The main concerns are:
- Slow forum response
- Picture upload needs to be restored to original or made even easier
- User online needs to show true members online
- Search needs to be more responsive
- Home page needs to have better search to find important items
- Avatars need to show properly
- Private message to talk with individual members without giving out email addresses.
If you have any ‘Surggestions’, please post them here. My main objective is to make a site that people enjoy visiting, so now is your chance to speak up.
Thanks for your patience and help.

Have you done a reindex/rebuild of the board files since all the changes? Might speed things up a little… just a thought.

Did that. I am at the point of getting a professional computer guy to install a real forum that has the features and upgrades they told me this upgrade had. This isn’t what I consider an upgrade.
December 17, 2007 at 10:47 pm #31232Billy SimpsonMemberWell, I liked the older version more but progress requires taking chances. It will get sorted out eventually.
I bet no one wants to go back to the past with what was available to fabricators back then. Imperfect or not, this is still the number one site by a long shot.

Big difference today in speed and response
December 18, 2007 at 5:29 pm #31255Andy GravesKeymasterTwo weeks later and I finally got it sorted out.
After talking with many supposed “Experts” the general concensous is that the old forum was slow and outdated because the traffic and number of post made it extremely slow.
This second ‘NEW’ forum has the features, speed and reliability to take FabNet into the future.
Picture posting is easy with just a couple click. No more browsing through the database to find the picture you uploaded.
Quick Post – This is located at the bottom of the list of posts. Makes it easy to type in a quick reply.
Avatars – They work again
Aggregated is now gone – Replaced with ‘Not Read’ link at the top left. This feature is an improvement, especially for regular users. Click “Not Read” and it will give you an entire list of all the thread, in all the categories. Even the ‘Members Only”, Pinned, and locked threads will appear.
‘Mark all as Read” – When you want to clear the forum so you only read new threads this feature is a big help.
Polls- Ability for FabNet members to poll the member
Subscribe – Ability to be notified if someone responds to a thread by email. If you post an important question and need a timely response, the forum will notify you as soon as someone responds.
File Attachment – Ability to share files with other members. For example if you have a dxf file that someone is requesting, you can attach it directly to the post.
I will post instruction, or where to find these features tonight.
Let me know what you like and dislike. Please be specific and I will do what I can to fix or change it.

You his the nail on the head. Speed, posting pictures and seeing all the unread threads was key features I was looking for.
December 18, 2007 at 5:33 pm #31257Tom MMemberWell, it does look different.
Unfortunate that the swamp shows in Not Read link.
December 18, 2007 at 7:56 pm #31260Mark FineMemberWhat do you mean “browsing through the database” as it relates to pictures? Whos database? I have my own. “My pictures.” No browsing just a few letters entered and the pic is there. Update…done.
December 18, 2007 at 9:32 pm #31268Tom MMemberYou copy and paste your pics?
December 18, 2007 at 9:38 pm #31269Tom MMemberAndy,
I don’t know if it is Firefox or the template, but so far I don’t see anything but bold posts no matter if I open, read, reload, get out/get back in, etc. That’s when I read the “Not Read” link.
There is also no “Mark All As Read” button that I can see.
Dang spell check highlights stiull aren’t there, either.
I’ll live.
December 18, 2007 at 9:39 pm #31270Tom MMemberI’ll say this, it loads quick!
December 18, 2007 at 9:44 pm #31272Tom MMemberAndy,
There’s quite a few posts in the Unanswered area that I know have had replies. Must be lost in transition?
I’m sorry to be such a bitch, but you did ask, so I’m having a walkabout.

Hey Tom,
I am in the process of uploading the list of new features. There is a ‘Mark All Threads as Read’ Look in the lower left corner. Down past all the post.
Once you click > ‘Not Read’, read all the post that interest you. Then scroll down and “Mark all Read”. The next time you visit, only the unread post will show.
Swamp – I actually forgot about that not showing up in all thread view. Let me see what I can do.
Firefox – Firefox has a cache issue that doesn’t clear the last page viewed. It does that on this site and many other I visit. I will investigate to see if it is something I can change.
Speed – The number one reason people leave websites is because of slow speeds. With the increase in traffic, continual increase in number of posts, the forum was getting so slow, at times it was unbearable. Thanks for noticing it is fast. That is a good thing.
Keep letting me know what works and doesn’t work.
