I am a home owner that purchased some remnents from a contractor. I asked him for some advice and all he told me was sear the web and gave me what he had left over.
I have been searching hi/low on how to fabricate this stuff and not getting to much help.
Can anyone from here give some advice or have videos of how to fabricate?I do some woodworking on the side building cabinets for friends and little odds and ends. So I have some tools.
Small Festool rail saw
Palm Router
Sanders, etc.My biggest concerns were the following:
With the Festool saw I cut a small piece to see how it would handle it. Do you cut through in multiple passes or one pass. Either way seems I can smell the burn and not sure if that is to be expected. For sink openings do people use hand routers, jigsaws or both? And recommendations of how to cut the the sink opening with a router and a recommended bit and speed. Again, I have tried a few and I seem to smell the burn or my router seems to have a hard time plunging in.
Thank you very much for your time and advice.

If you smell burning, it is burning and typically turns the material a darker color.
You are going to need carbide tools and a ton of sandpaper. This material is extremely hard and difficult to work with.

Sorry, I couldn’t resist that. Please see Brian Stones post above for more pertinent information.

Thank you. I have that document as well. I was hoping to find better directions in a video or something. I learn much better by seeing than reading if you know what I mean.
Example is like when I did my own concrete countertops. I purchased a couple books and videos and the video’s really hit home much better then the books.
I would post a picture of my end result but can’t figure out how to upload an image

I would say that it’s fairly normal to get a little bit of a burning smell but if the material is turning black and smoking then you need to do something differently. The person that you need to contact is Gene McDonald.
I know that he has fabricated a decent amount of the material and he’s very helpful. If for some reason he doesn’t chime in or if you can’t get a hold of him on here you can check out his website at http://www.gotgreencountertops.com/
Gene, you can thank me for the referral later.

Thanks again. I have stumbled across his (Gene’s) site before and have tried sending him an email and he has never responded. That was a month or so ago. Then I got sidetracked until recently trying to work with the Paperstone. Maybe I will get lucky and he can assist me here.
November 30, 2010 at 2:18 pm #64530Andy GravesKeymasterYou will probably not get much assistance calling a fabricator direct. They are in business to sell countertops, not help DIY folks do it themselves.
The manual is going to be your best bet. Practice a little and you will get the hang of it.
Post a picture when you complete your project.

November 30, 2010 at 4:44 pm #64537Gene McDonaldMemberHey..Like I told you aj..I do not know of or have time to make videos of me fabricating, using my adhesives, my inlay filler, saw blades teeth per inch..so you can do a countertop..I am so sorry
You did great by reading the manual..but then do..make a little sq ft top so you will be able to jack that up…but its like reading an airbrush book..the reason I have gotten hesitant about advice or suggestions..is because I got too many of those calls…I did what you said Gene and now the customer hates me..LOL
I can suggest how to hi polish with grits and someone may do it with different pressure and then it gets on me…I have learned to direct to fab manual to start out with…I am a trailblazer..I took paperstone to the limits from inlay cherries and coffee beans to doing sculptures outside with it…but I spent lotsa time(which is money)…so I also think itsa small world
I spent money to attend classes and get certified…if you contact paperstone they will send a rep to see you and problay train you in shop..its not being mean..I just think the best way to help you is to do according to manual…best advice is to do..
paperstone MFG are lame to offer the handyman specials to people..first of all its different thicknesses..which mean s when you seam it it will have busted paper layers in it.and they sell it and people install it and tell the world Thats paperstone…crazy
Not me..buit be prepared and expect to pay money to learn something..anything you learn costs..College, trade school, certiifcation swith solid Surface, etc
welcome to the fabnet buddy

Did we talk or something? You make it sound like we did.
As for videos, I am thinking we are on different wavelengths. My thought of a video is something completely different then what you are thinking.
But thanks for your time.
December 1, 2010 at 7:38 am #64552Gene McDonaldMemberIm sorry Aj, is your company start with a BAy Cabinets type thing…then sorry for the misunderstanding…I got two email from someone claiming to ask the same thing and I responded the same way..But again welcome to the Fabnet
December 1, 2010 at 7:44 am #64553ajamesMemberNo I work for FedEx and raise poultry
December 1, 2010 at 7:52 am #64554Gene McDonaldMemberwhat thing you did not mention is the thickness of the remenants you bought…PS comes from 1/4″ – 1 1/2″ so if you got the thick stuff…yes two to three times might be better…one of this biggest problems with Paperstone is people thinking its paper …its such a dumb name..first off all to sell it..very difficult to get sold for more money than granite..its resin you are cutting that happen to have paper thrown into it..
The reason PS mfg’s tell you to use woodwork tools is cause paper comes from wood and its more like working with hard rock maple dipped in resin…doesnt that sound more descriptive that paper in resin as if you could cut it with scissors
just cut it a couple times to get the feel, then use ur top round to clean up the edge…you should be ok…sorry…If ur name is Ajax from florida in a Bay name type thing..then I apologize…good luck learning..and welcome
* NOTE DISCLAIMER: I know this is fabnet, but the suggestions just mentioned are not to be held responsible from Gene McDonald if they cut their fingers off, if thier ryobi saw kicks back and cuts their thigh in half..I am not responsible.
Using Festool decreases the odds like Aj uses festools..dont use crappy tools when learning is a statement from me…after that You are on your own…xoxoxoxoxoxox
December 1, 2010 at 8:22 am #64555KCWOODMemberGene, like the disclaimer!
