MemberWhile the pros of baseball is not my cup of tea for obvious reasons stated on other threads on this forum, my little guys 1st effort at organized baseball begins on Tues. afternoon. We spent some time Sunday at a Sports Authority shopping for cleats. The look in his eyes that he was actually getting big boy baseball shoes was priceless. We also purchased some glove oil so we could season that glove…break it in and some batting gloves.. My 15 year old is on the high school golf team, so that is a totally differant shoe buying experience. Gloves to !
We see that Mory’s little guy is all about hockey. I can’t imagine what that gear costs you but being in Florida, I wont have to worry about it.
We all talk our share of business around here so what sports are your sons and daughters in to around the rest of the country??

MemberDave,
Thanks for asking.
Daughter – 13 – Basketball (we’re in UConn Women’s Basketball territory, so it’s a natural), likes softball, prefers hardball.
Son – 15 – Hardball, online gaming (doesn’t count, but he is good at organization and squad leadership, which is great as far as I’m concerned).

MemberDave,
Florida has hockey teams, but we do have the cold weather. Alot of games are played at 6AM on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Nothing like below zero temperatures and driving to an ice arena to sit on cold bleachers, but I love every minute of it. I also have 4 other boys, all grown. One also played hockey when he was 5 years old, he is now 26. He made it all the way to the pros, but then decided he had had enough and went back to school, good for him. You are right, the most enjoyable thing is to watch them put on the new glove, shoes, uniform etc. Or to hear this new sitck has the right curve to it, the bat is great…Or the skates are faster than my old ones. It makes it all worth while. THe most important thing that he has learned is that someone has to lose and he’s ok with that. He knows he gave it his best shot and there is always next time.

MemberMory, we do have the Stanley Cup winning Tampa Bay Lightening in these parts. Went to one of the games during that championship. Fran bought it for me for my birthday. Pretty cool.
MUrban, you sir are busy ! But, it’s a real fun busy.
Went to the first T-ball practice tonite. Seeing 8 or so 5 year olds running around the field practicing the basics was a real treat. If I could just harness their energy. I gained more joy in that 1 hour practice than I have in a year !

MemberDave, Are you just the sponsor or you caoching them also? I caoched my sons team last year ans that is fun also no greater joy than looking at the kids eyes sparkle when you tell them they are doing a great job and see them then try even harder to get better.

MemberReuben, I’m also one of the coaches. At our next practice we’ll be going over the art of the knuckleball and why the split-fingered fastball is over rated.
February 28, 2007 at 8:45 am #15769Reuben Hoff III
MemberAhh, but dave if you can through a true split finger fastball (or I called it the fork ball) they batters will never know it is not a knuckle ball. It acts the same, but has more speed and one can control it a little better. Was my favorite pitch in college to make the big sluggers look like Grandma swinging the bat. Just keep these kids from wanting to through the curve and slider until at least 15 years of age and maybe they will keep their arms in tact to actually have a shot at playing a long carrier.

MemberAt 5 you just hope they don’t kill the guy 4 spots away. Oh, sometimes it is never to early to teach them where to hide the sandpaper
February 28, 2007 at 1:26 pm #15782Richard O’Brien
MemberSpeaking of hiding sandpaper, when the little guy comes to work with dad, he likes to box stuff up or put it in his backpack. One day I’m attempting to tidy up his room and I find like 25 mixing tips and a hundred bucks worth of diamond resin pads. He likes to stick the pads on the end of the tips and sling them like frisbee.
Guess I’ll have to frisk him before he leaves the building.

MemberDave,
I consider myself lucky that my kids have not yet discovered the aerodynamic properties of laminate samples.
And I get those free.
