Anyone seen the december Popular Mechanics? Good, fair article on counter tops, not perfect by any means, but whose work is?

And I quote “Solid surface materials such as corian, gibralter and avonite are little more than homogeneous slabs of plastic, but they’re arguably the perfect countertop material.”

The only thing that jumped out at me was their price for the solid surface. I’m a suscriber so I think I’ll do a letter to the editor and point it out.

Page 111, december issue of Popular Mechanics. I’ll see if it is available online and post a link if possible.

Thanks, Al, you da man. I will look for it.
Somewhere I have the original Popular Science review of Corian. I hope DuPont has it somewhere if I don’t. They did a bunch of cool stuff with it, like chess pieces and the like. They always loved solid surface. I love those guys.

You hit the nail on the head with the word “Finally”.

    From the article Al linked:

Counter fabricators typically polish granite to a high gloss, but a matte finish is also available.

Heh, there using our language, not the stone guys.

However, there’s another type of solid surface worth considering — quartz composite.

Interesting: They group it with ss, rather than stone. I don’t disagree with this, but it means they used manufacture, rather than tooling to make their comparisons.

Their pricing is off, but what’s new? Are concrete counters really that cheap?

    on laminate:
High-gloss or heavily embossed surfaces quickly show signs of wear.

Finally, someone said it out loud! Why do these laminate manufacturers put these finishes out there?

All in all a good read, Al, thanks for posting it.
