I just sold a Silestone job. I priced the standard 3cm top, but the customer said no, he wanted the 4cm top. I had not seen that. A quick call and found out the Silestone guys do it all the time, and it is about 20% less expensive too. It is actually a 2cm product with a 2cm edge buildup.

After thinking about this for a moment, why isn’t SS made in 2cm? All one would need is one layer of buildup to get the 1 1/2, would get more buildup strips out of 30″, a vanity would be good to go, no buildup needed. I know there is 3cm out there, I just like the looks of the thicker top plus having the option of making a vanity top.

    Thinking out loud….. kc

Hello KC Mystera and EOS both have 2cm material and your right vanitys are good to go. Dont do many vanitys becase of price of man made marble. I think soon all solid surface will have all three 1/2, 2cm, and 3cm.

Corian used to make 3/4 in all there colors until they added so many colors. I like the 3/4″ material for certain applications, but it heavy.

Did not know EOS and Mystera both made 2 cm product. I guess I don’t have a rep in my area that has introduced it to me. Thanks for the info!!

I use Meganite 2cm material for a wile now. this is the only product I use for vanity tops at this moment, I love the fab. time and the product comes in 26.5 x 10 Ft.
I’m not sure if all Meganite distributors have this available, but the distributor in the South East has it in stock.

How do you get a splash out of that size? Are you limiting your counter size to 22″ or your splash to 3″

Hopefully the distributor carries strips to use as backsplash. 26 1/2 inches?? humm. I always enjoy getting an order of Avonite Polyester, I love the 36″ width!!

    Andy,

There is usually no build up for those 2CM bath tops so you can get a 22 1/4″ top with a 4″ splash. Assuming the entire sheet is usable. Most vanity tops we do here are just 22″ deep. We do some 2 CM product here as well as 3CM, have to admit it is a great concept. Did you know there are 8, 3CM materials available here now? Its just a matter of time before all the manufacturers are producing it. Some of the bigger companies already have it, you just have to ask.

3/4″ material was always my favorite. You didn’t need support for up to 12″, making the strength/weight ratio a big plus. We still finshed the bottom, of course, but it was more elegant, and less expensive. You got less stress problems, a stronger joint for not a lot more width (see all the strength talk from the 3cm solsurf guys), but it was indeed heavy as all get out.

That was back when we were all wussies, that never carried 16 frickin’ pounds per sq. squat like we do now.

Walk in the park, my freind, walk in the park.

If CNC was cheap and simple back in the 3/4″ days, we may never have seen it go.
