Memberhas anybody had trouble with the TECH adhesive brand? it is spotty when
it comes to drying. most of it takes the normal 30 minutes or so but in
spots it can take 12-24 hours and its ok to machine. i’ve already
switched brands and have had no problems since under the same temp and
moisture conditions.November 2, 2006 at 9:53 am #9087Chad Thomas
MemberStan,
If an adhesive that is taking 12-24 hours to harden it is not likely that an actual cure is taking place. What is probably happening, is the material is “drying out” in the under catalyzed areas of the seam. As such , the bond strength in these areas will not be that of the properly cured (catalyzed) areas. This is my opinion as we do not make the adhesive for TECH but as a general rule with dual component acrylics, peak exotherm temperature (cure) of a thermo set resin in a 10-1 system should take place within a couple of hours at most.
To alleviate the “spotty cure”, two smaller beads running right back over each other should be used rather than one large bead.
Hope this helps.

KeymasterStan,
You want to solve all your glue problems, call Chad or Ray over at Integra adhesives. I used to use other brands of adhesive but had trouble with it drying. I have only had a few problems with the Integra but it was me trying to use glue that was too old.
Integra sells direct and they also sell through solid surface manufacturers.
Disclaimer: Integra advertises on the Fabricator Network, however I have been using their adhesive for over two years.

MemberI did a Avonite job a couple of weeks ago, and did have some drying problems. I told my rep about it. I actually had the seams show after it did dry, but it was against the side where the stove was so I did not have to rework. My rep called just this week and asked if I still had the lot# of the adhesive. Seems they are having other problems as well. I don’t think I will use their”Tech” brand anymore.

MemberFrom what I have heard from talking to some one with inside info, TECH had some problems with their glue and were going to change the manufacturer that supplies them the adhesive. It would be better for them if they got it from Integra. Like Andy I have been using them for a while and have had no problems. Only adhesive in my shop.

MemberThat IS NOT what I was told. Whomever “up top”made the decision to go with this new manufacturer is sticking by them. They have had problemsfrom day one, or that is what I was told. I guess they must be getting one heck of a price to sacrafice quality for profit. I have never had trouble with Integra, and will order it with all my Avonite from now on.

convince him that i thaught of that problem already and ran trial runs
with old adhesive from previous tops and had no problems at all.thanks guys. i’ll probly never go with the TECH again and stick to what works. i might post the lot# later

MemberI have had the problem with every adhesive but corian and wilsonart. It has cost us 1000’s of dollars. I took the tip off of several cartridges that I had trouble with and ran half a tube on some scrap. and at the the end of a squeeze just before you open your hand for for the next squeeze the color part keeps flowing but the hardener pinches off at the bottom of the squeeze ,and doesn’tcome out again until you start the next squeeze. That creates a section in the tube with no hardener mixed with it .The hardener has a different texture than the color. except with corian and wilsonart.Integra is better than most, but I can’t stand those new cartridges with the little tips. You have to take the tip off every time and my guys forget and have ruined several cartridges.and we have a very hard time getting them in and out of the gun.The front of the cartridge is too small for the guns and it wedges into the gun.We have settled on corian glue for just about everything .Like everything else corian,it’s costly, but you know that the hardener is in the color and the bond is great. And THAT is PRICELESS.

KeymasterWhat do you do for other products? We just leave the tip on the
cartridge to dry, The next time we use it we just snap the tip
off , purge the glue a bit and stick the new tip on. Works
everytime. -
