I was checking the internet the other week and stumbled onto a site http://www.solidsurfacesurplus.com

I sent them an email and talked with the owner who was very nice. We talked about the possibilities of this idea and what it could do for the industry. He has many ideas, but would love to get the input of others in the industry. Please stop by the site and tell me what you think. Is this something that you could use not only to buy that hald sheet of material, but maybe to list your own material on his site?

I think it would be great to have a site like that that everyone could list their extras on and that we could check to buy pieces we might need that others have. I am all for it!

Why not do it on this site for members only, that way we can help each other. All we would need is a list of inventory, or just do it by request. Hey Andy could you get on that![EMO]bigsmile.gif[/EMO]

What if we combined the two or brought solidsurfacesurplus in with us. They would manage their site and handle all the stuff and we would be allowed to list our inventory for free.

Sounds great way to help get rid of that extra stack in storage, but do you think certification for cetain brands would create a problem?

Nope. If you don’t sell enough to make an entire kitchen then I don’t think there is anything to worry about.

Ok.. I’m a little slow at things, but I have to ask this question. I have not been doing SS that long compared to most of you, but I too am starting to have quite a collection of scrap also. When I look at the surplus site, I see pieces on their site about the same as those I have. Most I have are not large enough for a vanity, can’t really seam them to another piece because of color match problems, so here they still lie, still scrap. I’m trying to come up with a senario where I would use the scrap of someone else. I can’t; when I think of a residential job. I will always order enough to complete the job.

I started keeping all my plywood/hardwood scraps years ago, to use on other jobs. I soon figured it was costing me more time to pick and chose and restack, than grab a new piece and cut. I get paid for getting jobs out the door, and the sooner the more money I make. I imagine for the time I have spent handling my scrap SS and looking through it for a customer, it has cost me more than it is worth. It occupies space, has caused me to spend time now posting about it, Do we know the true cost of scrap?? I will always save the full width end pieces that are vanity material, but the other.. I don’t know yet. Shipping is so expensive now, I just can’t imagine having to pay shipping to get more from someone else. Am I thinking differently wrong on this?? I just believe scrap cost us more than we realize.

Kelsey, are you using your scrap for seam plates?

Yes,,, I think I have about 30 still laying around. I will put a 45deg cutter on my shaper, and with the feeder I’ll run several at a time, corner blocks too.

Okay so I am ready to order. I need a piece of Corian Flint. 48 x 30 or so. Anybody have one? 🙂 (I did check the soildsurfacesurplus website, but no Flint.)

We have not been doing solid surface long at all, but we are constantly finding things to use the scrap for. Sometimes it is for a miniature cabinet in someone’s house where we have done a kitchen or vanity, We have used it for very small vanities, end table tops, and just recently for my mom and dad’s motorhome countertops. The tiny pieces we cut up for use as build up and seam blocks. I guess we could end up with an over abundance, but we try to order just what we will need for the job and if the customer decides afterward to add something it is nice to have scraps to pick and choose from. We have a teenager come in a few hours a week or so to clean the shop (sweeping, etc..) and sort and stack the scrap material into our racks. It is pretty easy to see what we have and we don’t spend a ton of time looking for stuff.

I guess everyone has differing opinions on scrap, but I figure if a sheet is going to cost me $500 (for example) and I can get a partial sheet from one of you for $200 + shipping it still saves me money if I don’t need the whole sheet because then I don’t have an extra half sheet I don’t need and neither do you. 🙂 It seems insane to throw away material that is so expensive in the first place. (Not including tiny pieces if you have plenty of build up and such already.)

Lets say you find it, wouldn’t freight on a sheet this size make the cost more than if you ordered a half sheet and piggybacked this half sheet with another order and get free freight? just wondering?

On this size sheet that may be true. (I actually thought we needed a smaller piece initially.) However it really depends on where the sheet is in relation to the person who needs it. Shipping within Zones is usually very inexpensive and I happen to live in a large state with plenty of fabricators. In addition we do very little Corian work so I probably wouldn’t have another sheet to order with it.

I guess it also depends on whether as a fabricator you have time to deal with the hassle or if it is easier to just throw it away and get more later. Since I am sitting around in the office I am available to do this kind of thing, but others may not have that ability.

There are hundreds of ways to run a business and many of them are equally successful. I think a site like this would be great for some people and the rest of the people certainly would not be compelled to use it.
