KeymasterI was searching for articles about solid surface that would interest the solid surface fabricator and ran into this article. http://www.naturalhandyman.com/iip/infcountertop/infsolidsurface.shtm
If you are ever in a jam, now you have a backup. Just send them a template and you will have your counter delivered right to your door.

MemberI’d give it six months. Not a business model I’d invest in.

MemberCan you believe Formica would do such a thing? Warranty? They have a great vision for the SS Industry. What next, buying sheets at Walmart?

MemberWow…I think that is bound to be a disaster. My husband is a licensed contractor, specializing in framing, and he builds and remodels custom homes regularly, but earlier this year when he was learning to install even he didn’t pick it up immediately. I think he went on 5-6 installs as a laborer before he tried to do one himself. Even now he leaves the complicated installs to the guys that do it all the time. It seems to me like they are asking for trouble. I hope they have a good technical support line set up.
LOL Kelsey, they probably will try Walmart next…..

MemberAndy and All,
We fabricate all brands. We have been approved by all manufacturers. We fabricate for large retailers and lots of home builders. W have a program that is called vanities togo. Homeowners e-mail or fax us their measurements and after prepaying on their credit card we build it and they come and pick it up. I have also done a couple kitchens that way. I have even shipped one to a small town in Ohio and it was installled seamed and sanded by the homeowner. We made a good margin on it. Tell me why I wouldn’t continue to do this. Granted we do have sign-off sheets and everything is paid for in advance. All shipments are insured. Sorry Guys, this is a win/win for us. We will continue to ship countertops anywhere. KeymasterMory,
Here is the problem. If you allow anyone to install solid surface then how does the industry have a credible warranty. Back in the day when half the fabricators didn’t know what they were doing, there were solid surface installs that failed all the time.
Now you allow homeowners, like the guy that was asking questions here last week, he would have installed it on full plywood support. Then the counter fails and it brings down the industry.
Sure a homeowner can install a vanity, but when it comes to kitchens, I can only forsee huge problems.
On top of that, don’t the distributors tell all of you that you can’t sell the material uninstalled? Or have they stopped doing that?

MemberI forgot to mention, it seems we have an overabundance of work being shipped to Ohio and Kentucky. Must not be many fabricators there.

MemberAndy,
This is the truth. If I sent you a drawing from Omaha, asked you to fabricate it according the the drawing exactly, and then ship it to me with directions attached, gave you my credit card (before you even ordered the material), can you honestly tell me you would not do it? Or how many of you other guys can honestly tell me you would not do it. I honestly can tell you, I’ll charge your credit card and send it right to you. Warranty issues-Last time I checked manufacturers only cover the material and we will pretty much have that covered at the shop. It will be inspected during fabrication, prior to shipment. Read the fine print. So lets be honest.

MemberFor tops that do not need anything but setting them on the cabinets and splashing that is fine. After the hurricane here in 2004 some contractor used a program like this from a manufacturer I will not mention, he installed many jobs. the simple as stated above were fine except for silicone every where. But ones that hold down boards and/or seams took so much work to fix he could have just hired a real fabricator to do the whole job. However, I look at it as money for me because I get a lot of referels from some builders and ss suppliers to do the repair work.
I thank Kevin Andreas for those repairs, its nice to pocket a couple extra bucks in a couple hours on a Saturday.

KeymasterMory,
This is not an isolated counter that you sell to someone that has experience. This is an endorsed program that is advertised on the internet. The entire business model revolves around “Homeowners” making a paper template, sending it in and getting a solid surface kit in the mail.
Little different don’t you think?
