    I’m new to this board. Here’s a question I posted on woodweb.com

I posted this question a few years back but didn’t get much input. And this is a subject that only comes up once in a great while. So here it goes again:
Architectural drawings call out triangle shaped countertop supports for solid surface vanity tops. Can these be built entirely of 1/2″ solid surface? And be sturdy enough?

Here is what we’ve done in the past. 1/2″ thick 22″ x 22″ solid surface triangle glued to a 1/2″ x 3″ solid surface back cleat against the wall. We did groove the back cleat 1/8″ deep to accept the triangle. (still with me?) We also drilled (3) holes in the back cleat for fastening to the wall. The holes were lined with a steel bushing so the screw couldn’t be over-tightend.
At the top of the triange we siliconed 2 x 2 fir blocking on both sides to anchor the support to the vanity sub-top.
We have seen similar designs built by other companys. The ones we’ve built in the past seem to be holding up ok.

In the past I’ve found that the major manufactures (Corian, Avonite, Gibraltor, etc) frown on this design and recommend a steel support clad with solid surface. Not a bad idea but lots of labor and lots of material.

Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for your input.

    Craig,

Whenw e can get away with them, Knapp and Vogt have a super strong bracket that goes out to 21″. Awesone holding power. I will try to find a link for them.

I don’t see any reason why your idea won’t work. We have done that in a commercial bathroom because there was no support structure in place. Try to post a picture if you can.

Don’t worry too much about the manufacturers because a commercial bathroom is not warrantied anyway. The workmanship will fall back on you.

By the way, welcome to the FabNet.
