MemberHey, Does anyone have an opinion about “Gem Sanders”. I want to purchase one hoping to cut down on sanding time. (Fishing season coming you know) I didn’t see anything in any threads. Thanks, Dave G.

MemberDavid:
The guys who have production shops seem to prefer the Gem. I’m a Festool man myself, but Dani Homrich prefers a Porter Cable and a spray bottle.
There are people spreading the myth that you can’t blend a finish from a Gem with a Festool. This is a blatant attempt to sell more Gems and has no basis in fact as I’ve blended same more times than I care to count.
The Gem’s a fine tool. Whatever trips your trigger.

MemberDavid, look up the review that Chris menitoned. I wrote it. The guy in the photos is an ex employee that had trouble pouring piss out of a boot, but he could sand with that Gem sander. One unexpected aspect of buying the thing was that our sandpaper costs went down. The disks are thicker, don’t fold up like the 6″ ones we used on our porter cables and festools. You will get three or four sets tops out of each set of pads.
About as idiot proof as anything in the shop, a big factor in me picking out a machine for use in my shop.

MemberDave G.,
Love ’em.
Ask Andy how to do a proper search. There has been a fair amount of discussion in the rooms here at FabNet central.
Fresh or Salt water?

That’s the spirit!
Al, would it have helped if you gave the guy a wristwatch, and asked for the time?
I meant the pouring part.

MemberDavid,
Make sure you change the start date of the search to something way back. It took me about a week to figure out why I could never find what I was looking for. I usually just erase the “7” in 2007 and replace with a 1 or 2. Works for me.

MemberDavid, the Gem is so well balanced that I use it with one hand.

MemberHey Guys , Thanks for all the feedback. I guess no new Lamiglass med weight salmon rod for me cuzz I gonna buy a new Gem sander now and hopfully save some time so I can use my old Lamiglass rod. I like the Idea of one hand sanding, easier to flip the Cabelas catalog pages with the other. (sorry can’t help it,the fishing digs and all). I would however like to share that we recently installed XM radio in the shop and transmit to our FM hearing protector to pass the time while sanding. Whats funny is to see your partner laughing under his dustmask when the comedy channel is on. Thanks again
