Hey any movie fans out there?

Andy and I have joined this online Blockbuster thing and have been renting movies like crazy. The problem is so many movies are CRAP!

Anyone have any suggestions for good movie titles? We are open to pretty much any type although comedy, horror and action are the 3 favorites. On the comedy side of things, our taste is a bit immature…South Park style is really what we are looking for. The more crude and tastless the better!

    So bring on the titles!!

    Thanks,

    Val

    Suspense – Horror and otherwise:

    Hitchcock – none better.

Comes with some humor (The Trouble With Harry, The Lady Vanishes) interesting concepts (Rear Window – all shot from one room) Rope (one set), stars to die for (Stewart, Peck, Grant, on and on…)

M NIght Shaylaman (sp?) – the twist.

The Sixth Sense has got to go down as one of the all-time surprise endings ever. You get it right about the same time the character gets it. That’s a good script.

Kenneth Branaugh – the twist, part two.

Dead Again (edit note – I forgot to put the title in)

Reincarnation plot with flashbacks and a neat dual character relationship ini both lifetimes. Again, the ending, while not like the Sixth Sense, is pretty cool. Derek Jacoby as an important minor character, is always an interesting watch.

    Comedy:

    Word play

The Marx Brothers – Stick to: A Night at the Opera, Duck Soup, A Day at the Races, and Horse Feathers.

    Understanding New York comedy:

    Mel Brooks

Yooung Frankenstein has (the late) Peter Boyle, Gene Wilder, Terri Garr, Cloris Leachman, Marty Feldman, and especially Madeline Kahn.

Mel Brooks uses many regular actors, who were stars of early television comedy. From Sid Ceaser to Carol Burnett, he took the best of the character actors and built movies around them.

Blazing Saddles is as profane as it is hysterical. It also has the funniest flatulance scene on film.

High Anxiety takes several Hitchcock favorites and jumbling them all together.

Just remember – he always lets the audience know he knows they are watching.

Chick Flick comedy that guys will like:

Albert Brooks – Defending Your Life.

Purgatory as clearing house sorting out whether you’re reincarnated – to hopefully get it right this time, or move on to the next level. Shirley Maclain is the virtual hostess of the Hall of Past Lives, of course.

    overdose of classic old-school comedy:

It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World.

Very Long. Almost exhausting in its comedy. Almost every classic comedy style is in this movie.

I mean, when Jimmy Durante kicks the bucket, he actually kicks a bucket. And the camera follows it all the way down a mountain, and the characters just stare at each other, and you’re laughing throughout.

Guy Comedies that weren’t as stupid as Porky’s:

    Kentucky Fried Movie

    Airplane

    The Groove Tube (very offensive)

    The Mask

    Ace Vantura, Pet Detective

And for just plain I don’t know why I’m laughing at this but it’s killing me:

    There’s Something About Mary.

    Just a start.

What kind of movies do you like?

Tom (I’m not gonna proofread this)(except for, you know, where I did) M

I’m still getting over the fact that they play this uncut on Comedy Central.

    Rent some Brit television comedies.

The Young Ones is silly, but the characters are so well fleshed out it’s a riot.

Monty Python, of Course, but take a look at the American of the Bunch – the illustrator Tery Gilliam.

He likes to blend the real with the imagined until you sometimes don’t see the difference. Brazil is one example. The Adventures of Baron Munchausen is another.

    The Fisher King

    and Twelve Monkeys.

    Sci Fi –

Best interpretation award goes to Blade Runner, for grabbing the style of Philip K Dick’s book “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”

Rutger Hauer gives an awesome speach at the end.

    Worst interpretation of a novel:

    Starship Troopers.

ID4 and Men in Black are light, but clever and fun. Jeff Goldstein is always great as Jeff Goldstein. Will Smith keeps up with the best actors in Hollywood.

    My personal Favorite:

    Serenity

One of the best series that never lasted on television. Same cast, great writing. Great timing.

Watch the first episode of the tv series, and watch the movie.

I saw the whole series before I saw the movie, but the pilot episode will get you familiar with the characters.

    Man, I have to stop.

    Kentucky Fried Movie.

Stay away from anything with “Does Dallas” in the title.

Shows you what I get for typing that late.

    Jeff Goldblum, not Goldstein.

Harvey Fierstein, the playwright is in the movie. Bad Freudian slip.

    Sorry Mr Goldblum

    Heh.

I just noticed that the woman who plays the unfortunate First Lady in ID4 is Roslyn on Battlestar Gallactice.

I just re-watched the 1979 original “Invasion of the body snatchers” with Donald Sutherland and Jeff Gold(whatever the h#ll his name is)blum. I forgot how great that flick really is. Especially for 30 years old.

“Kung Pow – Enter the Fist” by Steve Oederkerk is a terrific spoof comedy. “The Boondock Saints” and “Domino” are absolutely must-see action films as well. Val, you will love Domino. It’s about chicks kickin’ a$$.

    Enjoy!!

Thanks for all of the suggestions guys. Can you tell I am a movie junkie?
Keep the flick titles coming. I will add them to my “to rent” list.

We got the Blockbuster movie deal where they send you the movies in the mail. Works pretty well, plus you can take the movies back to blockbuster for another movie. Cost about 14.99 a month.

    My wife (Val) loves movies.
