This story first sounded kind of funny. Nerdy guys out searching for a lost fellow-nerd, But it started getting cooler as I read it. Then it got fascinating. Then almost unbelievable.

I hope it ends well, but I’m not so sure.

I’m also not sure if you have to register for the NY Times, but I didn’t have a problem.

Almost down to the bottom of the first page, you’ll notice that the subject of this story has received the Turing Award. You know those letters and numbers in screwy font you sometimes get asked to enter to prove you’re not a spammer bot? Those are called “Turing words” after Alan Turing, who was an early genius in artificial intelligence. Strange story.
