MemberI heard a new twist on granite and germs this weekend. This homeowner was telling another customer that solid surface was just like granite, bacteria wouldn’t stick to it or grow on it. I asked where he got that bit of info and was told it came from a granite salesman who priced him a top.

KeymasterJust nonsense information. We need to do a test on granite and bacteria. I would bet that it grows inside that material. Unless of course it is sealed.

MemberA while ago, someone told me a bout a picture of a granite top that was in some ones home that had been removed due to an odor emitting from it. The picture shows the underside with mushrooms growing from it. Is this true or is it a myth? If it is a myth we should contact mythbusters (you know the show on the discovery channel) to do a very public testing on which material is more hygenic. Now that would be some pretty revealing information.

MemberJohn:
No need to bother the mythbusters.
Take a piece of unsealed granite, cut a citrus fruit in half and place it on the finished side of the granite. In a few days, the juice will have soaked all the way through 3cm. I’ve seen it with my own eyes.
Good luck getting that stain out. The acid in the fruit has gotta be disolving stuff in the stone.

KeymasterMythbusters…Iike that idea. Are you going to call them to see if they will do the study.

MemberWe should throw it out there to them. I think it would be good for the solid surface industry as well as getting those guys more publicity. That is the kind of thing that other magazines would write an article about just like two years ago when a group of celebrity chefs got to design their own kitchens. I saw that in three industry magazines I read, on TV and had some customers walk in my showroom asking for some of the products they saw there by name. Manufacturers should do this kind of cross marketing more often.

MemberAs far as testing for true bacteria growth etc, I am trying to get in touch with some of my old bactertiology professors from school and get the media etc nedded to transport to them and all cost involved. Trying to see if I can get it done real cheap if they will use it for class project. I am planning on putting the stuff together with actual everyday use stuff, no certain strain bacteria certain qauntities etc. real life. Peice chicken flopped on the top, rib eyes steak etc. Then I will also set up set times etc. I have done trhis before it has just been a few years, but I have read all the test done by others and feel they have been scewed to satisfy the particular industry. This does happen alot beleive me, so i am going to set up a system and run it past a third totally independent party. This stuff will take time unless we have a big fat check somewhere. If any one has any other thoughts please let me know. Gonna try something tires of seeing gotta have Granite best thing around when I know better.
Thanks,
Reuben

MemberIf I could post Pictures I have some pretty kool pics from a Zodiaq presentation that show bacterial growth on a piece of Sealed Stone compared to the surface of Zodiaq, pretty dramatic stuff.

KeymasterRueben,
That sounds like a great plan. I will check to see if we have a big fat check available…Nope we don’t.
John,
Are you going to contact the Mythbusters?

MemberAndy,
I could shoot them an email. At the end of each of their shows they do ask for ideas, so why not?
