MemberWe just started using our new Gem sanders today and the tops look like crap!!! The finish actually looks good and my fabricators are doing them quickly but all the edges are rolled. They are working on two kitchens that have a bevel edge profile and the top edge is rolled over from the sander.
So I told them not to run the sander over the edge so far but they said they tried to only go over far enough to sand to the edge and it still rolled it over. What are we doing wrong? I know there must be a way to sand to the edge without rolling it. HELP!!!!Shane

MemberHave 2 drinks of scotch and call me in the morning.
First, Do not put pressure on it. The weight of the machine is enough. Most of the time I use it one handed.
Second, only let the paper lap the edge about an inch, on all grits. I trained my guy by using a piece of masking tape, taped about a 1/32 down from the edge on a 45deg bevel. Too much pressure or overlap will cut the masking tape. When they get the feel for what rolls over, and what doesn’t, it will not be a problem. It is more feel than anything. We do a lot of roman ogee with the square top, always comes out just fine.
If I did not explain this good enough, have a drink, then call me… 270-365-2115

MemberUsed ours last week, no problems. Used the “least smart” guy in the shop to try it out.
Any chance you’r running into “not invented here” syndrome? Attitude of workers can be strange sometimes.

MemberAhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Shane, the GEM is for perfect finishes on a flat surface. Are the guys attempting to use it on an edge? Using to much “elbow grease? What abrasive being used? What brand of Scotch? How old? The scotch that is?
The “not invented here” syndrome Al speaks about is so right on that I’m getting a tatoo of it. Changing human nature, I’m over attemting.
As Chris stated, you end up swinging the GEM with one hand it flows so naturally.
So, I’ll call you in the morning.

MemberDave….12 year…shoulda went for the twenty. After further use
we found that they were going a bit far off the edge. We cut it back and things
look much better. I think it may take some time to get use too.Shane

KeymasterSand the edge of the counter with a DA or Festool first and then use the GEM over the entire top. Go right up to the edge of the sheet and don’t really go past. Let the sander sand and don’t need to apply pressure.
Make sure the pad is on correct and not wobbling real bad. I ran into a problem when the sander went past the edge and cut the paper. The tear caused a bad swirl mark throughout the top.
Don’t give up, the sander is awesome.

MemberShane, look for a call from the owner of GEM, Rich Biederman a little after 8:00 am your time. Share any concerns, and he’ll explain exactly what to do and not to do although Andy was right on in his assesment.
I can’t type fast enough and don’t want to miss anything in translation so I figured having the King of all things GEM, giving you a call would help you out immediately.
It’s all about service after the sale.

MemberDave,
Just got off the phone with Rich, had him on speaker phone
so my fabricators could listen in. He set us straight on the proper use of the
sander as well as some helpful tips. Thanks for setting that up, your right it
is all about the service after the sale.Shane
