MemberI was working on finishing a set of darker tops and although the finish looks great, there was quite a bit of very fine dust that would not wipe off with a dry rag. How are you guys cleaning your tops before delivery ?
Thanks!
Fred

KeymasterWe usually clean our tops after we install with window cleaner. The static electricity in the material after sanding makes it hard to clean with a dry rag, especially in the shop with the dust.

MemberFred,
There is a product that Joest manufactures, which is called a dust-disc. This non-abrasive pad would simply be put on your sanding pad, following your sanding process. All static dust would be picked up with this disc and stored in the fabric. It truly is a simple, yet effective remedy to remove all static and dust. This dust disc can be ordered through Federal Saw and Tool.

We clean the tops with water in the shop and then at the job we do a final cleaning with Windex or actually the Class Cleaner from Costco. That’s it. No complaints in 20 years.

MemberAndy….I assume you do this on site cleaning before caulk at walls or set on splashes?

MemberWe wipe em down with a microfiber towel (3M makes one type) that picks up most of the dust, and cuts through static, then clean up with Windex usually.

MemberMatt, that 3M Micro fiber towel is awesome! They’re about 6 bucks a pop but they pick up everything. Great for cleaning your glasses as well. Never heard of using them for cleaning solid surface. Great suggestion. Thanks.

They are great. You can wash them, just can’t use fabric softener. $6 bucks a pop, but they last forever. They pick up SS dust extremely well.

MemberSam’s and Costco have those microfiber towels also, they come in a package of about 10 or 12 and if I recall they were about $15.00. Hopefully I did not step on your toes Dave.

MemberNo Wade, you didn’t. There are differant thickness’ in the 3M micron towels. I have not purchased them in quite a while. I bought a 100 ct. box and gave them out at one time. Not sure what Costco is offering. Will check out.
One thing is for sure, like was stated, you can not use fabric softener when you wash them.

Careful, Paul. That’s a coating. It will leave a film.

Tom:
Yeah, it leaves a film. A film that causes water to dance like Fred and Ginger. A film that makes a Scotch-Brighted top look like a polished one. A film that leaves no fingerprints or static.
