We have been doing more and more drainboards lately. Do you all reinforce the underside of the drainboard because of the fact the material is being cut thinner in that location?

    Andy:

I’ve seen “drainboards” that didn’t have any slope and therefore didn’t drain. If you’re cutting deep enough to get slope to drain, you’d better reinforce.

We slope our drainboards from 0” to ¼”, and currently are only sloping the routed grooves as opposed to routing out an entire area. The 1” sink flange offers plenty of support at the point that the grooves are at the deepest point so we have never provided any other support. If we were to rout out an entire area for a drain board then I would definitely do a support piece.

    Jon,

What type of drainboards do you do the supports on and what type of support do you use? Have you had problems when not doing supports?

What type of support do you put under them? And Why?

treat it like a seam or a repair, use another pc of 1/2″.

We use a piece of scrap and cover the majority of the area where the grooves are. Nobody has ever told us it is necessary, just makes us feel better. Impetus was probably the instability of the sheet before gluing one time when we did a stainless sink instead of a SS, but we do it all the time.

Its been a while but I believe DuPont wants it reinforced whenever you route the top 3/16 or greater in depth. I could be wrong.

We just glue a piece of 1/2 material under the area of the drain board.
