MemberIs everyone getting this in their email?
It seems somewhat advertorial in nature, but there is still good info to be had.I have heard of shirestone before, always thought it was a hobbit kind of thing. Can anyone tell me more about it?

MemberTom, I have a customer who just started selling this product. I’ve seen it and it looks “interesting”. I think it tends to be very messy and labor intensive. If you would like, I could give you their number. Your located in the north and they, in the south.(way south). It does pose some creative possibilites.

KeymasterI saw the same thing and it looked more like and advertisemnet than a real ligitamate magazine. Maybe in the issues to come it will be a little more substantial.

MemberI’d say that’s about right, Andy. It does have two good things going for it:
1.) It is incredibly easy to navigate, so you can get the info on whatever quickly. Even if it may be no more than propaganda.2. ) It’s kind of a bunny slope for those who like to “fisk” articles for accuracy. It’s pretty easy to spot the places you need to call “B.S.”.

MemberBut the Shirestone intrigues me.
From what I’ve seen (and that isn’t much), the product might not be the cat’s *ss, but it could be a pointer to it.
Sooner or later someone is going to come up with an aesthetic, malleable, sealed material that is easy, fast and cheap.Hopefully after I stop making tops.

MemberWe ran some information on Shirestone in the July/August issue of Surface Fabrication. You can find it online at http://archives.surfacefabrication.com/publication/article.jsp?pubId=1&id=97.
Hope this helps.
Best,
Kevin

MemberKevin,
I can’t believe I missed that article. Thanks for the pointer.
Pyrolave – that stuff is so expensive, and from what I’ve heard so far, is only made in France by a company whose attitude does not do the French proud. Some more info on Shirestone here.

Chris:
Shirestone had a booth at the show before last, I believe. I thought it was appalling. It looks like some goo your ner-do-well brother-in-law cooked up. I don’t know, maybe a rough textured uneven very funky surface will be the next big thing some designer announces. All us slick smooth shiny sanitary guys will be out in the cold.

MemberAll us slick smooth shiny sanitary guys will be out in the cold.Joe, I’ve sometimes been accused of being slick, rarely smooth, shiny ?- not too much, but sanitary? My everyday language would out the kibosh on that moniker right quick.
Oh, you meant our tops?
Never mind…

MemberI got a response from a preliminary email and someone from Shirestone called this afternoon. They are sending out a information kit so I should have some more details next week.
Joe,
I wondered about the uneveness of the product myself, doesn’t hurt to look though. They said they would put me in touch with a new dealer in Tampa , (cherry picked for his good experienc probably) but again, doesn’t hurt to look.
More details as they become available.
