Member*Bit life expectancy: 1) How many average size solid surface residential jobs can you cut on your CNC before replacing the bit?
2) Are you having bits re-sharpened?
3) How long will a re-sharpened bit last you?
4) How are you tracking bits if you are having them re-sharpened?
FYI: Currently using a 3/8″ triple flute up-cut bit, cutting around 25 average jobs a week. New bit has been lasting us ~2 weeks. Sharpened bits have only been lasting us 2-3 days
Thanks,
Brady

MemberBrady, there’s no way a professionally sharpened solid carbide spiral should only las 2-3 days. Seems there is something suspect with the sharpening process. As to how many jobs you can get out of a bit, I’m sure there are several factors to that and thet the folks on here with CNC’s would weigh in on that.

KeymasterSharpened bits suck but we still use them. The cost to resharpen is really cheap compared to the new bit. The time estimates seem right though. You should maybe get a little more time out of the sharpened bit but you are doing pretty well cutting out 18 tops with a sharpened bit.
This is just my experience. I will be interested to know if this is the same for everyone.

MemberAndy, send me a couple SC Spirals and I’ll sharpen them no charge. I’ll betcha you’ll get close to the same longevity of cut vs new. We do about 50 per week and no complaints.

MemberCan I send a couple of bits your way to have sharpened? For a charge of course. I would just be interested to see if you sharpen our bits if we could get a longer life than what our “sharpening service” gives us.
If so, how much?
You can email me if you don’t want to throw it out here?

MemberBrady, I consider a fabricator that is getting that little life out of a solid carbide spiral a challenge. One I can fix. Here’s the deal, send me 2 of the bits that don’t cut for you and I’ll check them out and do them no charge. The only cost to you is UPS back. Our usual price on them is $18.00. No matter the size.

Dave,
Is that the cost to sharpen two bits?
