MemberI just happen to be working on a top that requires clear adhesive. There was a little left in the tube, so I just thought I would try it on several different colors I had laying around. I used it on Talus Sandbar, Quarry Palisade, Aspen Brown, and Pebble Gold, all Staron. All the joints were edge buildup. The seams looked perfect. I even took them up to 1200grit, still perfect under very bright light.
My question is, anyone else ever do this, or use clear when you run out of a color. In the case of the Quarry Palisade, the clear looks better than the pewter (integra). The Pewter, you have to look very hard to see it, but the clear in invisible. Does the colored only provide help for when a joint is not so perfect?? KC

MemberWhat brand of clear did you use? I have thought about this also, I was thinking that it would be great if we could get a Trans colored glue that would work with all most all sheet colors, like Trans silicone. Corian Dawn Beigh glue is as close to this as I have seen.

MemberGot the clear from Tech Products, their brand. Forgot who makes it for them.

MemberJust used it on the HiMacs Volanics “tambora”… same thing. Perfect. I am, however, going to do a few deck seams later, just to play a little more, and also make a few small defects and see what happens with clear vs colored. This is starting to interest me…..

MemberI use Integra’s adhesives all the time, great product. I use clear on the darker colors and some of the odd solid colors also. Mainly on on Hi-Macs though for the clears.

We have developed an adhesive called “Chameleon” that is designed to be slightly translucent with the goal of picking up the surrounding sheet color. We recommend it to be used for Poly Blend and Poly products that are clearer than the acrylics (Avonite, Formica, EOS etc).
KC
There are two important adhesive characteristics involved in getting the seams to disappear. Color and translucency (amount of color). When we do our color matching, our goal is to provide a color match that is going to result in the best possible seam for those instances when a seam is less than perfect. If a clear adhesive is used in a seam that is not a good fit, the high translucency of the adhesive (relative to the surrounding sheet material) will invariably produce a dark line as the adhesive accepts more light than the sheet. Conversely, an adhesive that is more opaque than the surrounding sheet material, will result in a light line (solid). As such, a colored or tinted adhesive which closely matches the “background” color and overall translucency of the sheet material will provide a more inconspicuous seam than clear adhesive in less than perfect seams.
In the lab, we use a 5 thou’ feeler gauge to open up one end of a seam when doing our color matching. I believe that if you were to take two pieces of the Staron Quarry Pallisades and seam one with our Pewter and one with Clear, opening one end of the seams as I have described, you would see that Pewter will provide a better match.

MemberChad,
Thanks for that info! You answered my question about the defects (5 thou) gauge. I dry fit all my seams and try to get cuts a 100% before gluing. I would like to know more about the Chameleon adhesive and the colors you recommend using it on. When I did my first Volanics Tambora, I had one heck of a time out of it. I used what said, but it did not match good

MemberKC,
We stock clear glue and use it on many dark colors as well as much of the Mystera product. With Mystera, you may have three distinctly different colors running through your seam. Makes it somewhat difficult to find a good match for some sheets. Clear usually works, especially given that you can usually pick out seams anyway with the veined material.
We inventory about 8 colors of glue and very seldom order additional colors. It works for us with no real problems.

MemberMatt it would be interesting to know what 8 colors you stock.

MemberWe buy Gruber Adhesives
Colors we use most of:
Taupe
Pearl Grey
Rambone
Cameo White
Smoke
Colors we stock but use little of:
Dusty Rose
Glacier White (use mostly for mounting sinks)
Puddin Brown
Clear
Bone
They make a Trans White that I am thinking about keeping in stock, but we just kinda buy it as needed.
I guess that is 11 colors but the bulk of our use is the first five colors.
Karl, your guy here in St Louis has borrowed a couple tubes from us to do some repairs. He does good work, but he’s not cheap…….:)
ATTN: Suppliers feel free to sample me comparable colors if you want some of my adhesive business.

MemberClear VS Colored adhesives in my opinion is not a comparison, it is like night and day. Sure you can make clear work in some applications but to get an invisible seam on the highly opaque colors is near impossible. Using the charts and colors that we recommend you can have a rookie pulling seams in your shop and be happy about the results.
Our competition recommends clear on many colors because their color line is quite small. We stock over 140 colors and have a fulltime lab staff that matches colors. If we do not have the color we can make it.

Memberhey Ray, Thanks for the info.
I did some more testing on different colors, and if one gets ‘perfect” joints, then there is no visible line. However, as you stated, if a novice is making seams ,the imperfections that can occur, will be hidden for the most part.
You make a fantastic product Ray, I have never had a problem with your adhesive. I cannot say that about any other brand. KC

MemberThanks for the kind words KC.
We are really passionate about what we do here. (I always get asked how you can be passionate about glue, but we are.)
