Since I moved to Lake Orion, Michigan, six years ago,I’ve been a member of the local library book group. We are assigned a book to read every month, we read it and then discuss it at the next meeting when we pick up next month’s book.
Book group is tonight in about 50 minutes so I have to type fast.
I like it because the book group is about 90% women and because it makes me read things I wouldn’t normally select for myself. Tonight’s discussion is on “Island At The Center of the World” by Russell Shorto (islandatthecenteroftheworld.com).
It’s the story of how the Dutch, not the English, originally settled Manhattan. It’s a dry start, but once you get used to the funny names, the reading gets easier. Does the name Breuckelen sound familiar? How about Staten Eylandt or Lange Eylandt? The Dutch invented Cole Slaw and I learned that the term “mad hatter” came from the permanent delirium caused by the use of mercury by hat makers separating beaver fur from felt.
While I’m sure everyone finds these tidbits fascinating, the reason for this post is to share the title of an English screed, this was before newspapers, which demonstrates the animosity between the English and Dutch: “The Dutch-mens Pedigree, Or, A Relation Shewing How They Were First Bred and Descended from a Horse-Turd Which Was Enclosed in a Butter-Box.”
Now there has been some banter between posters on this board, but all, myself included, don’t deserve to empty the chamber pot of the genius who penned that title 350 years ago.
I gotta go, my ladies are waiting,
Joe

There was a murder in the parking lot of my suburban library over seven years ago. Some adulterous affair thing.
The entire library was a bit safer tonight while I was at book group. My pistol league practice, .40 Heckler and Koch with the trigger job, the night sights and the thirteen tries I get at a bad guy made sure of that.
Ferndale, Michigan, a bastion of liberalism, tried to ban firearms possession by library patrons. It didn’t take long for our lawyers to explain the errors of their ways to the judge who set them straight.
Sleep tight,
Joe
