I had a costumer ask about using the same color solid surface for some extra support for a bar top. It is a 42″ step up bar set on 2×4 wall I have 1″ MDF siloconed and scered into every stud, however he may still want some extra support for grandkids to due chin ups I guess. Is this a good idea or will it be a pain latter after they smack them around with the chairs for awhile?
Reuben
Reuben,
How deep is the bar?
Sounds like you have given a lot of support with the 1” glued and screwed, again depending on the depth of the bar. On a side note, I would usually use a panel adhesive for the MDF to the wall, I don’t think it makes much of a difference but I think it holds better.

Shane,
It is a 12″ overhang . It seems plenty stout to me but maybe grandkids use things as diving board.
Reuben, I do what you are doing on every job its seems, in Florida all you see is the elevated snack bars. The way you are doing it is plenty of support, just make sure when you screw the mdf down that you stagger the screw pattern so that you don’t create a “dotted line” of screws causing weakness of the mdf.
Norm,
Good idea about the screw pattern. I never thought of that. We ususually put two rows, but I will stagger from now on.
Yeah, with a 12″ overhang I agree you have it plenty strong. I would tell the customer that if they feel they need them in the future it is no problem to add them later.
