    Norm, thanks for the post.

The guy in the article says that Avonite is denser than Corian. I don’t think this is the case, is it?

Of course if he means 7″ thick Avonite is denser than 1/2″ Corian, I might say “No duh!”.

“Each speaker has its own foundation, separate from the home’s foundation. The speakers weigh a ton each, so they need the support. They’re made from 8-inch-thick Avonite panels.”

Is it just me are is this just a little crazy. I have heard some amazing sounds coming from speakers that weigh a little less than a TON. (Although I would like to hear these monsters)

I just wish I could be the one selling them the Avonite material at $50 bucks a sq ft.

    Thanks for the link Norm.

    WOW,

Systems start at around $300,000. For that, in this part of the world, I could buy a house and 5 acres and a 3 grand bose system and be just fine.

30-50 /sq ft. it has to be the acyrlics (foundations) the studio collection should be more. Plus I think that with the vibrations, the poly’s would shatter.

I’m just wondering how thick they would have to be so that they wouldn’t crack, even with a very powerful subwoofer. Obviously one layer of solid surface would probably sound better than wood. Also, wouldn’t it be smarter to laminate 3cm material instead of what they are doing?

I say make them out of concrete and cover them with Avonite. No problem with vibration then. There use to be a company in my area that made concrete speaker boxes, the only thing is you needed a fork lift to move them.

As far as what BMX is doing, they are going after a extremely high end market, I still think you could make them out of 3cm material and they would be fine, maybe a few layers thick at the bottom for stability. Ya know kinda like putting the features of a Benz into a Escort.
