MemberHere’s the underside of a wee small top we are doing for a commercial job. When you see the pics, remember that this is all one top. Except for the close ups of Dani’s clamps, and the thermoformed drop skirt (I always liked that term), each photo shows a different section not yet seamed (which will be done on site, of course)The second to last pic is at least 20′ all by itself. I have to get the actual dimensions from Jim.
Dani, I have the full-size pics if you want the two or three that feature your clamps.

MemberI don’t know if you can see it, but the section in the second to last pic goes all the way to the miter saw, that is in sillouhette in the background, so it at least is 25′.Tom

KeymasterThat job makes me tired. Looks like a lot of work. Nice job though. How do you plan on transporting a top that large?

MemberAndy,
Jim owns, along with the shop, a snowmobile trailer. Makes a good flatbed, except for the raised sides.Tom

DaniYeah, I need to glue a futon back together at my house. I’ll have to blow the dust off of them.
Oh, and find where they are.
By the way, I emailed my shop and will try to send them Monday, maybe before.
They are 6 megapix, if I send them one at a time, can I get them through your internet thingy?Tom

MemberTom,
You can resize the photos if they are over 900KB in size I think my Email limit is 4MB. The 6 megapix is ok as long as the photos don’t exceeded the 4MB limit.

MemberThe easy way to cold bend edges
By using Dani Clamps you are able to hold the strip on the glue blocks to apply adhesive to the deck exactly where the strip is going to be when slid down on the blocks. It is very easy to push the bent strip down when clamped using Dani Clamps.
Clamping a 2 3/4″ to the end of the deck using 2 Cox solo clamps, a waxed melamine board, and Dani Clamps good isde down. The second photo I am showing the squeeze out on the top side is less than the thickness of a sheet of paper, no need for a grinder the sand this one out.

No CNC work here, all the tops were fabricated by hand from four 1/2″ MDF templates.

KeymasterVery Nice Dani. I can’t imagine doing this without a CNC

MemberTom,
Yes, I did every top. Fab and finishing time about 10 hours for 5 tops and it took me 7 ½ hours to make the templates. Every top is 72” except for 1 at 83”, 2 ends at 74” and one filler at 41”. Having done tons of work in hotels in the past I know that the temperature is able to very as much as 40° in meeting rooms, no good for long tops. They always turn the heat and air OFF when they are not in use. All the tops were butt jointed, no hard seams, set on dabs of silicone at 89° and I used Dani Clamps at each joint to hold the tops flush while the silicone was setting up. From my Hotel experience and where the room is located it should never get over 94° but it could get down to 54° in the winter. Butt jointed at 89° would give the tops enough expansion to handed as much as 98° and all they are going to do in the cold is shrink.
