MemberI,m considering buying an AXYZ 4014 table with a Colombo 10HP spindle.
I know some of you have an AXYZ router and I’m wondering what you think about them, good points and bad points.
Are there must have options or things you wouldn’t purchase the next time around.
Thanks in advance for your help.

MemberPaul,Where are you from?
If you’re near Connecticut, I’d be happy to show you our 7012 AXYZ.
As far as necessary or desired options, you’ll find quite a debate on that, and some of the decision will be how you intend to use it.
i.e. If you are going to reintroduce the tops to the machine for edge profile, you might want a tool changer. I don’t, and we don’t have one, but we did upgrade the 10 H.P. head to the quick change style. I’d say get a 5 H.P. head and a 10, for a few different reasons. We haven’t used the sander that came with it much, if at all, but some might disagree strongly with that. The puck is essential.

MemberAlso, regardless of which unit you buy, I would run a copper ground line along the dust evac hose, especially the collapsable kind (with the wire spiral wound design), to help discharge static that can build up there. It was responsible for an ugly bit of business with us a few years ago – no problems since.Tom

I’ve never bought a CNC but I do know that the guys from AXYZ have been at every solid surface show and I’ve never heard a bad word about them ever. If I were in the market, I doubt I’d shop anywhere else. AXYZ has earned and deserve their excellent reputation.

KeymasterI kinda feel the same way about Fabricator’s Choice. To this day I kinda kick myself cause I didn’t buy what they were offereing at the time which was AXYZ.

MemberPJB,
We have an Axyz from fabricators Choice. Those guys are great. They have outstanding customer service. We have only had a couple of hiccups and they have been operator errors. They have overnighted anything we have ever needed. If it breaks it is there the next morning. I hope this helps. I don’t know where you are from, but if you are close to the Omaha area you are more than welcome to come hang out in our shop for a day. We’ll give you CNC training 101.

MemberThanks to all for your quick responses. It’s amazing how much information and experience you can can tap in a few hours with the internet and the fabricator network. Thanks to all involved for making this resource available.
It sounds as if the AXYZ machine is a good choice. Several of you use it and there seems to be no negative comments.
Most other machines I have come across seem to have a few problems lurking in the closet. High cost, poor support, breakdowns, etc. I will continue with lining things up to purchase an AXYZ machine, probably in the June timframe.I am in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, if any of you know where that is. Thanks to Tom and Mory for your generous offers to visit with you, but you are both quite a ways away for a weekend visit. I will be attending the conference in Orlando with my wife Barb in March and would love to talk to all of you about CNC and Solid Surface fabrication in general. AXYZ will be there with a machine and I plan to make a final decision based on what I see at the show.

KeymasterPaul,
Even if it cost you $1000 to go to a shop like Tom or Mory and they will let you watch and learn their techniques, it would be well worth it. That kind of access is worth $5000. I remember when we first got our CNC, without help from another fabricator, it would have taken me 6 months to get effecient. There are just so many little things that you can learn by seeing one in actual production.

MemberJoe’s link reminded me of one problem we did have with our AXYZ. One of the power heads did not have a large enough air line to it. It caused a problem at times that, until we were using the machine full-bore, it never came up. We had it fixed, and I was not too thrilled about the engineering that went into it. On the whole I have been extremely happy with both AXYZ and Fab Choice, though I know they are not working with AXYZ anymore.

MemberAndy,
Of course you are correct. I would be a fool to miss such an opportunity. I’ll talk to Tom and Mory and see what can be arranged.
Are any of you cutting anything besides SS on your machines?
