Karl from BTP had a question for me I could not answer. Had some suggestions but…

For resurfaceing sinks, are there any 3″ electric random orbit sanders on the market? Can’t have a barrel grip because of space constraints. Several air tool companies make a 3″ but having an adequate air source in the field is not feasible.

    Suggestions?

Dave, I guess a better question is, if Festool or the like came out with a 3″ electric sander, how many folks would buy them??

Me, if it is reasonably priced say a bit less than the Rotex sander.

Or, could someone make an add on pad for a 5″ sander that would do the job?

If any of you guys work out regularly, just pencil in 2 vanity bowls(cleaned previously with pumice), sand by hand, 4 grits no breaks. And skip the workout.

Thats what I do, except for the regular workouts.

Chris, I haven’t worked that hard since high school, lol

No, I don’t see a market for them. Putting a 3″ pad on a 5 ” random orbit sander may cause a balance problem. As I mentioned to Karl, most of the customers I have use 3M sanding sponges to knock out those bowls. Or. a 3″ air sander in the shop but not in the field.

Keep in mind, BTP is dealing with re-surfacing sinks. I would think they probably have there share of abuse.

I’ve ordered something I’m going to test but I need to get it in my hands and use it before I go further.

    Karl,

Have you tried my 5” radius sanding pad? It will fit on a 7335 Porter Cable and the diameter is only 3 ¾”. I have been using it for years for all my sink refinishing with great results. I haven’t found a sink yet that it wouldn’t fit into the corners. Also there are many sink Mfg. using it as well for finishing their new sinks.

As Karl stated in his e-mail, the 7335 with barrel grip is not and option. It apparently is to big for some of his applications.

Karl, we’re here what seems like 24/7. Call anytime.

I under stand what you are saying Dave, but with the radius on the pad you are able to tip the sander up and sand with the edge of the pad without digging when using the proper grit sand paper. This makes the grip a non issue. The only place is the bottom of the bowl where the grip becomes an issue anyway, the smallest amount of material that needs to be finish on a sink. So all the sides and radius are completely covered and most of the bottom, besides you have to hand finish around the drain anyway, so what is left.

    Akin to a Discit 5268.

Again, has to be a tool manufacture with a 3″ electric tool.

Dave, don’t laugh but here is a 2 3/8″ electric sander for gourds, hey at least they make one this small, scroll down the page when you get there.

Dang Norm, that thing would be perfect if it had some power to it although I have no idea the rpm’s. You need a transformer to run it? Think I’ll order one on Monday or at least call the place and see what they are all about.

Karl, ever practiced on a gord?

Amazing what you can find on the internet. To bad that isn’t random orbit.

    Karl,

We used to use the little jiggle sander by Makita but it had a larger 6″ pad. Is there a way to convert the 6″ pad to something smaller and then just cut the sandpaper to fit?
