    I just did a job in Avonite Goldmine. The customer picked out the Satin finish for this, which was a great choice for her kitchen. I know the unfilled polyester is not too forgiving as far as sanding mistakes, so I finished this one myself. I have excellent lighting in my shop, especially where I sand countertops. One piece, a “L” bar top was 5×6 and it was inbetween the kitchen and dining room. When I got on the job site, here was this newly installed huge 14 bulb 60w lighting fixture, that looked like a glowing sun. Well…in the reflection I could see the direction of my last scotchbrite pass. While the homeowner just thought it was awesome, I knew the faint lines were there. I know they were not there under my shop lights, but under this highbeam demon, they were there.

    My question is, under the right light, will all sanding marks show to some extent. I can do mirror on black that looks great, but since I did not take this past satin.. just wondering. I’m sure if they had a normal light nothing would have been seen.

    Let me save you the wait ’till Monday. Dani will tell KC how to use his polishing system. Dani will tell all of us how to use his polishing system. It works. It will be beautiful.

    The key here is the customer was already in love with the finish she has. I’d cash my check and be happy. But hey, KC, go on back and fuss with that thing.

    I have Dani’s polishing system and it works well, no mess. although you do have to clean the rubbing compound pad often while using it. Joe, give me a call some time, we have some catching up to do.

    K.C., the perfect is the ememy of the good. I warn customes that highly polished tops will not be perfect, in reflections, or refraction. Before started doing that, I had a few call me out on call backs talking about water marks or scratches. You would get there, they would point out the area and I’d have to ask them where the defect was, as I wasn’t seeing it. They would say, “oh, you can only see it at around 10:30 or so, if the sun is shining and you set on the couch.”

    It is great that you are wanting the best top possible, but doing that is both expensive and next to impossible. I tell customers that we strive for perfection, but we know we won’t get there. Yet, if you don’t push the help that way, things can go downhill in most shops in a hurry.

    You are using too much compound, use no more than a teaspoon per 2’ X 2’ section. You should be able to polish a full sheet or more with out washing out the pad, but yes you do have to brush off the pad once or twice for each section.

    Everyone just has their opinion. I don’t think they are trying to beat you up. I know I don’t sand exactly like you but your suggestions have really helped me. I appreciate all the help you give to the people on the FabNet.

    And it gets better….. This customer “J” called me first thing this morning and said…..”Is there any way you can add another overhang onto the other end, honey sure does wish she had a place for another barstool”? UGGHH Yes I have the material left over, yes I have the time, yes there will be a heck of a PITA charge I thought. I thought about it some more and called the customer back, and just told him I would do it for just my hourly shop time. Yes, I could have priced it so high he might have figured out I didn’t want to do it. But fair is fair. About an hour later, I get a call and it is a person that says “J” told me how happy he was with your work and I would like for you to come and ‘template” my cabinets. I told him, I’ll come and measure and give you a price, but he said, “J” said you give a good honest price and do good work, we are ready to buy. I left there with not only a deposit for a job, but referrals to 2 more replacements for their family members. It was a good day!!!

    Nice job KC.

    I guess there is still some good karma going around. The best salesmen in the world is a satisfied customer.
